Do you listen to podcasts? I personally can’t get enough. One of my proudest moments was when a group of friends asked me for horror podcast recommendations and I felt so flattered to be considered an authority figure in this area. To share the knowledge, I would like to write about a few of my favorite spooky podcasts, perfect to download for Halloween season.
Guide to the Unknown
Guide to the Unknown is a brother and sister duo who cover weird and unusual topics in horror media and culture. Will and Kristen’s dynamic is a huge draw, and of course all the topics they cover are really unique and interesting, such as The Sun Vanished, Physical and Trance Mediums, and movies like GhostWatch. My favorite episode to date is “Unexpected Horror for Kids,” where they cover some of the movies and tv shows that ‘scarred you for life.’ This podcast is also available on YouTube.
Stories with Sapphire
Sapphire Sandalo is doing the most. Not only does she write, act, sing, and animate, but she also hosts a podcast, Stories with Sapphire, focussing primarily on true stories of the paranormal from Filipino folklore. Some episodes hold multiple stories around a specific theme, like “Premonitions.” Others are more specific. One episode that sticks with me is the episode of Batok, traditional Filipino tattoos. Bonus content included animated stories are on found on her YouTube channel.
Ghosted! by Roz Hernandez
Did you ever watch the show Celebrity Ghost Stories? Well, this is basically the podcast version. Ghosted! by Roz Hernandez leans into spooky fun with various guests who may or may not believe in some aspects of the paranormal. Past guests have included fellow comedians like Karen Kilgariff, ghost hunters like Katrina Weidman, and celebrities like Cassandra Peterson (Elvira). My most revisited episodes are Kyle Ayers talking about Stull Cemetery and Gunnar Deathridge talking about a dream experience. Plus, Roz is a beautiful funny person and an excellent host!
Ruined with Alison Leiby and Halle Kiefer
I have a confession to make. I haven’t seen every horror movie. I know, I know, this is a horror blog and I’m not supposed to admit that, but luckily Ruined has me covered. Ruined is a podcast hosted by two friends, Alison Leiby and Halle Kiefer. Alison is too scared to watch horror movies but Halle is obsessed with them, so Halle retells the plots of horror movies, and we listen along. I’ve listened to episodes retelling some of my favorite movies (“The Birds,” “It Follows”) as well as a few movies I’d never seen, and their comedic banter is really charming.
